History of Zachrich Hampshires & Corriedales
Thank you for taking a moment to become familiar with Zachrich Hampshires & Corriedales. My name is Tom Zachrich. My wife, Jane, and I live on a small farm in Northwest Ohio.
I grew up on a farm and over the years my family and I raised rabbits, laying hens, broilers, ducks, geese, steers, hogs, and goats. One day at work I was telling Tony Rowland that the goats were eating everything in the area we had fenced off for them except the grass. He told me he had just what I needed to take care of that grass. He sold me two very old Corriedale cull ewes. A couple of weeks later, I bought several hundred more feet of fence and made a much larger area for the sheep.
Then one day Jane suggested to me if I was going to raise sheep, why not get some that can have lambs. After calling several Corriedale breeders, we went to the Wayne and Karen Kemler Farm near Van Wert, Ohio. Wayne helped us pick out several ewes and a ram. So, we purchased our first registered Corriedales and began our adventure in the sheep business. The following year we started our Hampshire flock with Hamps from Walter Paxson and Family. Over the years we have strived to produce top quality sheep for show and for sale. We have bought the best quality that our budget would allow.
Corriedale Flock
We have been able to enjoy a lot of success with lambs from Kin 9902, a son of “Super Strike” we bought in 2000 along with the 2004 National Junior Champion Ram, “Sergeant Willy” Seals 224 purchased at the National Sale in Sedalia. We have also added ewes from the flocks of top breeders like the Kin Brothers, Phillippi Corriedales, Bruce Hoffman, The Wayne Kemler Family, Miami Valley Corriedale Farm, Rodney & Cathy Morris, Ben & Mary Bow, Ryan & Hilary Craig, and Robinson Corriedales. We have shown and sold Corriedales at the National Corriedale Show & Sale each year since 2001.
Hampshire Flock
As with our Corriedales, we have been just as successful with our Hampshire lambs from “Defiance” Jadewood 0207 RRNN purchased in 2002 and “Justifier” Gordeneer 313 RRNN bought in 2003. We have also added ewes from the flocks of the well-known breeders McCandlish Hampshires, Carr Hampshires, Schlichter Hampshires, Walter Paxson & Family, Rikow Hamps, and Jadewood Valley Hamps. We have been fortunate to be able to sell our sheep to people in 15 different states. What a thrill when someone buys from us again and again.
In 2004, Zachrich Web Services launched our website www.zachrichsheep.com allowing the information about our sheep to become available to the whole world. It has proven to be one of the best decisions we have made to promote our Hampshires and Corriedales.
The most important thing to us about the sheep business is not the sheep. It is the people. We have made so many friends all over the United States just being a part of the Corriedale and Hampshire Shows. If you have seen us at a show, chances are very good you have seen our daughter Carrie and our son Chad and daughter-in-law Kim. While we are at a show, our older son Tom is busy as our substitute shepherd. We enjoy the fellowship of all our families, the Zachrich Family, the Corriedale Breeders Family and the Hampshire Breeders Family.
Our desire is to continue doing what we have been in our sheep business. Buying and producing the best sheep we can.
